The legislation would enact major reforms to America’s voting system.
On Tuesday, a group of senators led by Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota introduced new election reform legislation entitled the Freedom to Vote Act. The bill includes extensive changes to federal elections such as a minimum 15-day early voting window in every state, requiring same-day voter registration by 2024, and making Election Day a federal holiday. The bill, built on the framework of the For the People Act which was blocked in the Senate in June, faces a likely filibuster by the minority party which would require 60 votes to overcome.
Senator Klobuchar stated, “Following the 2020 elections in which more Americans voted than ever before, we have seen unprecedented attacks on our democracy in states across the country. These attacks demand an immediate federal response.” She noted that the bill “will set basic national standards to make sure all Americans can cast their ballots in the way that works best for them, regardless of what zip code they live in.”
